The Ethics of Enmity in International Relations and Its Role in the Confrontation between Islamic Civilization and the West from the Viewpoint of Ayatollah Khamenei

Abstract
This paper analyzes the concept of the ethics of enmity in international relations and its impact on the ongoing confrontation between the Islamic civilization and the western civilization from the perspective of Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei. With respect to ongoing conflicts and tensions around the world, confrontation with enemies is inevitable. Since the enmity and hostility of enemies have their roots in their hegemonic and despotic approaches, expressing enmity is not only legitimate but ethical. Thus, following the ethics in facing the enemy is both a religious obligation and a base for civilizational interaction between Islam and the west. Studying the ethical principles emphasized by Ayatollah Khamenei with respect to enmity, this paper also evaluates the role of such ethics in preserving the identity and authority of the Islamic civilization. Key issues such as learning about the type and density of enmity, separating hostility from opposition, distinguishing the concept of enemy from enmity, exercising justice in enmity, respecting the rights of the enemy, avoiding unethical methods in diminishing the reasons of enmity are among the major moral subjects of the paper. Such approaches - particularly in the context of civilizational confrontation – maintain the validity and magnetism of the Islamic Civilization at the international level and are signs of authenticity, evolution and primacy of this civilization. Employing a library-based and document-based methodology, this paper uses qualitative content analysis to extract and analyze ethical concepts from the speeches of Ayatollah Khamenei. The Islamic civilization, relying on ethical values in the face of enmity, is able to help uphold human dignity and promote peace and peaceful co-existence; but the western civilization – with reliance on an amalgamation of modernity, liberalism, secularism, pragmatism and humanism – has based relations with others on imposed political paradigms and belligerent approaches and cultural equalization.
